Skating Academy Schedule & Class Description

Basic Skills teaches the FUNdamentals of ice skating and provides the best foundation fo figure skating, hockey, and speedskating.  Six progressive levels introduce forward and backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, and turns.  Upon completion of the Basic Skills 1-6 levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of skating.  All classes will be well-structured with the focus on proper skill development taught in a positive, FUN, and social environment.  Skaters will progress at their own rate and advance after mastery is demonstrated.

Discover, Learn, and Play - Basic 1 and 2:  These intoductory levels allow new skaters (ages 5 -15) with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning to skate.

Basic 1

  • Sit on ice and stand up
  • March forward across the ice
  • Forward two-foot glide
  • Dip
  • Forward swizzles -- 6-8 in a row
  • Backward wiggles -- 6-8 in a row
  • Beginning snowplow stop on two feet or one foot
  • Bonus skill:  Two-foot hop in place
Basic 2
  • Scooter pushes -- right and left
  • Forward one-foot glides -- right and left
  • Backward two-foot glide -- glide the length of skater's height
  • Rocking Horse (one forward swizzle, one backward swizzle) -- repeat twice
  • Backward swizzles -- 6-8 in a row
  • Two-foot turns from forward to backward in place -- clockwise and counterclockwise

Snowplow Sam - Tot Ages 3-5 (click to expand)

The Snowplow Sam levels are introductory classes divided into levels allowing children with no prior skating experience to build confidence while learning the basic skills of skating.  These classes are designed to help children six and younger develop the ABCs of movement - Agility, Balance, Coordination and speed.  The ABCs are essential for developing fundamental movement skills and physical literacy.  All classes will be taught in a safe and positive environment, incorporating fun and games, making class time an enjoyable experience for all.

Snowplow Sam 1

  • Sit and stand up with skates on -- off-ice
  • Sand and stand up -- on-ice
  • March in place
  • March forward (8-10 steps)
  • March, then glide on two feet
  • Dip in place
Snowplow Sam 2
  • March followed by a long glide
  • Dip while moving
  • Backward walking, toes turned inward, shifting weight (4-6 steps)
  • Backward wiggles (6 in a row)
  • Forward swizzles (2-3 in a row)
  • Beginning snowplow stop motion -- in place or holding onto barrier
  • Two-foot hop, in place (optional)

Hockey Fundamentals (click to expand)

The Hockey curriculum is designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey skating.  In four badge levels, skaters will learn how to be more proficient and agile on the ice.  Proper skating techniques for the game of hockey are the primary focus of the levels.  All elements will be taught without a puck.  Skaters will learn the basic hockey stance, stride, knee bend, use of edges, and other necessary fundamentals to be successful in hockey practices and game situations.

Hockey 1

  • Falling and recovery to a balanced, standing position
  • Proper basic hockey stance (forward and backward)
  • March forward across the ice, 8-10 steps
  • Two-foot glides and dips from forward marching across the ice
  • Forward swizzles / double c-cuts (4-6 in a row)
  • T-push to a two-foot glide (hold 2-4 seconds) on a straight line, alternating feet
  • Snowplow stop, stationary
  • Bonus skill:  Front to back and back to front turns (stationary)
Hockey 2
  • Forward strides using 45-degree V-push, focus on good recovery and alternating arm drive
  • Forward one-foot push and glide (right and left)
  • Forward c-cuts -- single leg (right and left) and alternating feet (right and left) in a straight line
  • Backward hustle or march, then glide on two feet
  • Backward swizzles / double c-cuts (4-6 in a row)
  • Backward c-cuts -- single leg (right and left) and alternating feet (right and left) in a straight line
  • Two-foot moving snowplow stop
  • Bonus skill:  Scooting or skateboard push, on a circle (right and left)
Hockey 3
  • Lateral crossover march (both directions)
  • Forward c-cuts (1/2 swizzle pumps) on a circle, both directions
  • Forward outside edges on half circles (large Cs), alternating feet on the short or long axis of the rink
  • Forward inside edges on half circles (large Cs), alternating feet on the short or long axis of the rink
  • Backward c-cuts (1/2 swizzle pumps) on a circle, both directions
  • Backward snowplow stops -- one-foot and two-feet V-stop
  • One-foot moving snowplow stop (right and left), introduce 1/4 turn with hips to hockey stop
  • Bonus skill:  Forward stops and starts
Hockey 4
  • Quick starts using forward V-start
  • Backward one-foot glide (right and left)
  • Forward crossover glides (clockwise and counter-clockwise) -- hold feet in crossed position for two counts
  • Backward crossover glides (clockwise and counter-clockwise) -- hold feet in crossed position for two counts
  • Forward crossovers on a circle (clockwise and counter-clockwise, 4-6 each)
  • Backward crossovers on a circle (clockwise and counter-clockwise, 4-6 each)
  • Hockey stops (stopping to the left and to the right, with speed)
  • Bonus skill:  Forward to backward mohawk pivots (both directions, right and left) from powerfull, full strides

These classes are offered to figure skaters and hockey skaters over the age of 15, from beginners  who want to learn how to skate or those who want to sharpen their skills they already know and even learn more.  This class is fun, and you get to work at your own pace.

Each Free Skate lvel is comprised of a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins, and jumps -- all of which build on the previous skill, providing skaters a strong foundation of all elements.  These levels will be taught in a positive and interactive group format.  Instructors will focus on quality and mastery of skills.

Pre-Free Skate

  • Skating Skills:
    • Forward inside open mohawk from a standstill position (right to left and left to right)
    • Backward crossovers to backward outside edge glides (landing position) -- right to left and left to right
    • Backward outside edge to a forward outside edge transition (clockwise and counterclockwise)
    • Two forward crossovers into a forward inside mohawk, step down and cross behind, step into one backward crossover, and step to a forward inside edge (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Spins:
    • One-foot upright spin -- optional entry and free-foot position (minimum three revolutions)
  • Jumps:
    • Mazurka (right and left)
    • Waltz jump
  • Bonus skill:  Backward inside pivots (clockwise and counterclockwise)

Free Skate 1

  • Skating Skills:
    • Forward power stroking (clockwise and counterclockwise)
    • Basic forward outside and forward inside consecutive edges (4-6)
    • Backward outside three-turns (right and left)
  • Spins:
    • Upright spin, entry from back crossovers (minimum 4-6 revolutions)
  • Jumps:
    • Half flip
    • Toe loop
  • Bonus skill:  Waltz jump-side to hop-waltz jump sequence or waltz jump-ballet jump-top loop sequence

Free Skate 2

  • Skating Skills:
    • Alternating forward outside and inside spirals on a continuous axis (two sets)
    • Basic backward outside and forward inside consecutive edges (4-6)
    • Backward inside three-turns (right and left)
  • Spins:
    • Beginning back spin (up to two revolutions)
  • Jumps:
    • Half Lutz
    • Salchow
  • Bonus skill:  Variation of a forward spiral, skater's choice

Free Skate 3

  • Skating Skills:
    • Alternating backward crossovers to bacvk outside edges (4 sets)
    • Alternating mohawk/crossover sequence (right to left and left to right)
    • Waltz, three-turns (forward outside three-turn, backward outside edge glide) -- clockwise and counterclockwise
  • Spins:
    • Advanced back spin with free foot in crossed leg position (minimum three revolutions)
  • Jumps:
    • Loop jump
    • Waltz jump-toe loop or Salchow-toe loop combination
  • Bonus skill:  Toe step sequence (skater's choice) using a variety of toe steps

Free Skate 4

  • Skating Skills:
    • Forward power three-turns (righta and left) -- three sets each
    • Waltz eight (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Spins:
    • Forward upright spin to backward upright spin (3 revolutions each foot)
    • Sit spin (minimum 3 revolutions)
  • Jumps:
    • Half loop
    • Flip
  • Bonus skill:  Split jump, stag jump, or split falling leaf

Free Skate 5

  • Skating Skills:
    • Backward outisde three-turn, mohawk (backward power three-turns) -- clockwise and counterclockwise
    • five-step mohawk sequence (clockwise and counterclockwise)
  • Spins:
    • Camel spin (minimum three revolutions)
  • Jumps:
    • Waltz jump-loop jump combination
    • Lutz jump
  • Bonus skill:  Loop-loop combination

Free Skate 6

  • Skating Skills:
    • Power forward pulls (right and left)
    • Creative step sequence (skater's choice) using a variety of three-turns, mohawks, and toe steps
  • Spins:
    • Camel-sit spin combination (minimum two revolutions each position)
    • Layback or attitude spin or cross-foot spin (three revolutions)
  • Jumps:
    • Waltz jump-half loop-Salchow jump sequence
    • Axel
  • Bonus skill:  Backward outside pivot, entry optional

Hockey Mini-Scrimmage (click to expand)

This class is available to all hockey skaters that are currently enrolled a class in our Hockey series (Hockey 1-4).  This class works with sticks, pucks, and nets.  We teach stick safety, puck handling, game strategy, and involve the skaters in a mini scrimmage.  We provide pucks and nets and have sticks and helmets available if needed.  Ski or hockey gloves are recommended.  A hockey helmet with a full cage is required for this class.

Artistry in Motion (click to expand)

Available to skaters Basic 3 and above.  The basic principles and philosophies of choreography, presentation, and performance take center stage for figure skaters in this creative program.  Through basic body alignment, movement, and line, the foundation will be set to fully train skaters to master their routines that earn high-fives today and standing ovations tomorrow.  At the end of the twelve-week semester your skater will be doing a performance for the Academy skaters and families.

Intro to Power Skating (click to expand)

Available to skaters Basic 3 and above.  Speed is a fundamental aspect of skating.  This fun and important class teaches the skaters how to increase speed skating forwards and backwards, the art of turning, and stopping quickly.  Skaters will be performing drills, using concourse style settings, cones, and circles to become faster and more powerful skaters.

Spinning Basics (click to expand)

Available to skaters Basic 6 and above.  This class is anintroduction to spinning.  Skaters will learn about the different parts of the skate blade and the basics from turning with movement and develop those skills into complete spins.  This class will cover spinning on two feet and eventually spinning on one foot.

Available to skaters Free Skate 1 and above.  This class will venture into more difficult basic spins including scratch spin, sit spin, back scratch spin, layback spin, and camel spin.  Skaters will explore spinning using the right and the left feet.

Spin Intermediate (click to expand)

Available to skaters Free Skate 3 and above.  This class is where it gets fun!  Skaters will explore difficult variations of spin, like the Pancake, Tuck, Haircutter, Upright Grab, Broken Leg spin, etc.

Available to skaters Free Skate 4 and above.  This class is geared towards competetive skaters. Skaters will be sharpening their technique and performance aspect of spinning, learning and mastering combination spins (putting several spins all together in one spin).  In this class skaters can also practice the spins they have in their competition programs.

Jump Dynamics (click to expand)

Available to skaters Pre-Free Skate and above.  This class is designed to teach the skaters jumps, jumping technique, new jumps, jump combinations, and jump sequences.  This is an important class for learning proper body alignment and posture for jumping.

Cardio Power Skating (click to expand)

Available to skaters Free Skate 1 and above, including hockey skaters in the In-House program.  This fast-paced cardio stroking class is sure to make you sweat!  In this class we use fun fast paced music and several different drills to keep the skaters at their maximum speed and teach them how to increase their speed to the next level.  Endurance is very important for skaters, and here they will push it to the limit!

Axel (click to expand)

Available to skaters Freeskate 4 and above.  The Axel is the one of the hardest jumps to learn in our sport.  This class will teach you the basics of the Axel starting with walking through the technique of the movements, all the way to landing the jump while skating into the jump with speed.
